Why Your Agency Relationship Should Feel Like a Partnership, Not a Transaction.

There are a lot of things you pay for in business that are purely transactional.
You need something. You order it. You pay the bill. Everyone moves on with their day.
Your relationship with your marketing agency shouldn’t be one of those things.
At Storm Cloud, we talk a lot about partnership. And yes, I realize that pretty much every company likes to use the word “partner.” It sounds nice on a website. But when it comes to working with an agency, I think there is a very real difference between having a vendor who does your marketing and having a marketing partner who is invested in your business.
That last one is probably the biggest difference.
We Want to Know What’s Actually Going On
Some of our best client relationships are with businesses where we know WAY more than just what needs to go on Facebook next week. We know what they’re trying to accomplish this year, know which products or services they want to grow, when they’re hiring, and we know when business is great and when things are a little slower than they’d like.
Sometimes we know about a new idea before their employees do.
That context matters.

Marketing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. If we only hear from you when you need an ad, a graphic, a video, or a website update, we can absolutely do those things. But we’re working with a fraction of the information we could be using to help you. When we understand the bigger picture, we can start connecting dots.
Maybe the thing you’re asking us to promote isn’t actually the thing we think you should be spending money on right now. Maybe something you mentioned casually in a meeting gives us an idea for a campaign. Maybe we see an opportunity you haven’t thought about yet.
That’s when the relationship starts becoming valuable beyond simply checking things off a list.
A Good Agency Should Push Back Sometimes

This one can be tricky.
If you hire an agency and every idea you have is immediately met with, “Yep! Sounds great!” I would probably have some questions.
Partnership requires honesty.
Sometimes that means your agency should tell you they don’t think an idea is going to work. Sometimes we may recommend spending your budget somewhere different. Sometimes we might ask you to rethink something entirely.
That doesn’t mean we always know better. You know your business better than anyone, and there are plenty of times when a client gives us information that completely changes our recommendation.
But you hired an agency for a reason.
You should be getting more than someone who simply takes orders.
Our job is to bring our experience, ideas, strategy, and perspective to the table. Your job is to bring your knowledge of your business, customers, industry, and goals.
The really good stuff usually happens somewhere in the middle.
The Best Relationships Have a Little Give and Take

A real partnership requires something from both sides.
Your agency needs to communicate. We need to be responsive. We need to meet deadlines, be transparent, explain what we’re doing, and actually listen when you tell us something.
Clients have responsibilities in that relationship too.
We need feedback. We need information. We need approvals. We need you to tell us when something changes.
And sometimes we just need you to answer the email we sent three days ago. (You know who you are.) The clients we do our best work with are engaged in the process. They trust us enough to let us do our jobs, but they don’t completely disappear either. There is a balance.
We Should Be Celebrating the Same Wins
One of my favorite things about working with clients long-term is that their wins genuinely start feeling like our wins.
A campaign takes off? We’re excited.
The phones start ringing? We want to know.
You have a record month? Tell us.
You open another location, hire more employees, launch something new, or hit a goal you’ve been chasing for two years? We’re probably going to be almost as excited about it as you are.
That might sound cheesy, but it’s true.
When you work closely with a business for years, you become invested in what happens there. You remember where they started. You remember the campaigns that worked, the ones that didn’t, the ideas that sounded crazy and somehow worked anyway, and all the adjustments made along the way.

That history has value.
It also makes us better at our job because we aren’t starting from zero every time you call.
You Should Be Able to Call Us Before You Know What You Need

This might be one of my favorite signs of a healthy agency relationship.
The conversation doesn’t start with:
“I need a 30-second video.”
It starts with:
“Okay, here’s what we’re trying to do…”
Perfect.
Tell us the problem before you tell us the solution.
Maybe you do need a video. Maybe you need digital ads. Maybe you need a new landing page, social content, billboards, an email campaign, or some combination of all of those things.
Or maybe you need something completely different.
When you view your agency as a partner, you don’t necessarily need to walk through the door knowing exactly what marketing tactic you want. You should be able to bring us a business problem, a goal, or even a half-baked idea and let us help figure out what comes next.
That is where an agency can provide a lot more value than simply fulfilling an order.
Partnership Doesn’t Mean We’ll Always Agree
This is important too.
Healthy partnerships aren’t built on everyone agreeing 100% of the time.
There will be ideas you love that we aren’t sold on. There will probably be concepts we’re excited about that you don’t like at all.
That’s okay.
There might even be a campaign that looked fantastic on paper and just didn’t perform the way any of us expected. Marketing has a funny way of humbling all of us occasionally.
What matters is what happens next.
Can we talk about it honestly? Can we look at the results without getting defensive? Can we make an adjustment and try something different?
If the answer is yes, that’s a partnership.
The Goal Is to Feel Like Part of Your Team

At Storm Cloud, we don’t want to be the company you vaguely remember handles your marketing.
We want to feel like an extension of your team.
We want to know what you’re working toward, what’s keeping you up at night, what opportunities you’re excited about, and where you need help.
We want you to call us when you have a weird idea.
We want you to ask us what we think.
We want to be able to tell you when we think there’s a better way to do something.
And yes, at the end of every month there will still be an invoice. We are, in fact, a business. Unfortunately, our landlord has yet to accept “great client relationships” as payment.
But the relationship itself should be worth more than the list of deliverables on that invoice.
Because the best agency relationships aren’t built around transactions.
They’re built around trust, communication, shared goals, good ideas, honest conversations, and the understanding that everyone sitting at the table is trying to accomplish the same thing.
Help your business grow.
And if that sounds like the kind of relationship you want with your marketing agency, let’s talk. We’d love to pull up a chair.
